The wax museum in Season Out of Time was more or less inspired by the Josephine Tussaud Wax Museum in Hot Springs that I used to go to as a youngster, but I found out about another museum in my research that really reminded me of the one in the book and of one of my own dream projects (aka the Professor Theophilus’ Emporium of Imagination studio/tourist attraction).
In an old Dynamite magazine from 1980, I read about a young man named Cortland Hull who had created his own horror and science fiction museum from scratch. He even made his own wax figures. Cortland’s great-uncle, Henry Hull, had played the title role in Universal Studios’ The Werewolf of London in 1935, so he had a family connection to the horror film industry. Over time, he managed had managed to gather enough memorabilia to start a small museum, and his father helped him build one.
I was fascinated by that 37-year-old story and did a Google search to see if Cortland and his museum were still around. Apparently, both still are, though the museum has been relocated. This is a link to the Witch’s Dungeon museum is Bistol, Connecticut, and below is one of the videos I discovered. My inner 12-year-old is thrilled.
